Basant

BlackRock to gain control of Merrill asset arm

NEW YORK - BlackRock Inc. is taking control of the asset management arm of Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. in a deal announced on Wednesday that will create one of the world's biggest money managers with $1 trillion in assets. In the latest effort by an investment bank to shed its asset management arm, Merrill Lynch (MER.N: Quote, Profile, Research) will swap its Merrill Lynch Investment Managers (MLIM) for a 49.8 percent stake in the combined BlackRock company. BlackRock (BLK.N: Quote, Profile, Research) shares rose nearly 9 percent, while Merrill edged up about 0.5 percent in early trading on news of the deal that had been rumored for three days. Devastation losses from October’s killer earthquake would not impact country’s economic situation, for there was not that many agricultural activates.

Hezbollah chief tells Bush and Rice 'to shut up'

Beirut: The leader of Hezbollah said US President George W. Bush and his secretary of state should "shut up" after they accused Syria and Iran of fuelling protests over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad(PBUH). He was heading a march by hundreds of thousands of Shiite Muslims yesterday. Shaikh Hassan Nasrallah urged Muslims worldwide to continue demonstrations until there is an apology over the drawings and Europe passes laws forbidding insults to the Prophet. The head of the guerrilla group, which is backed by Iran and Syria, spoke before a mass procession of Shiites marking Ashura, an annual remembrance of the 680 AD battle in which Imam Hussain was killed by rivals. Whipping up the crowds on the most solemn day for Shiites worldwide, Nasrallah declared: "Defending the Prophet should continue all over the world. Let Condoleezza Rice and Bush and all the tyrants shut up. We are an Islamic nation that cannot tolerate, be silent or be lax when they insult our Prophet and sanctities.

17,000 candles! It's a record

BAHRAIN last night set a world record by lighting 17,000 candles. The candles were lit at the Manama Processions Area near the Gold Suq. Al Hussaini Society for Islamic Arts organised the event and invited the Guinness World Records to attend, whose representative witnessed the event. Many people who had waited for hours to light their candles had to go back disappointed because of lack of time. The society managed to break the world record in Ashoora last year for the longest candle. It is a Bahraini tradition to light candles on the 10th night of Muharram. The record for the most candles on a cake was set by St Ignatius Cub Scouts, Cincinnati, Ohio, US, who lit 12,432 candles in celebration of Ohio's Bicentennial celebrations on May 9, 2003.

Rescuers save 231 after ferry sinks

SAFAGA, Egypt - Hundreds of Egyptian men crowded around the entrance to Safaga port on Friday, weeping and angry as they awaited news of relatives missing on a ferry which sank overnight in the Red Sea.
"They are not telling us anything," Gadir Mohammed shouted. "Where are the corpses? Where are they taking the survivors?"
One man wept on another's shoulder and people around him tried to comfort him. "God willing, he'll come. God willing, he'll come," one of them said.
Search and rescue teams have found 231 survivors and 185 dead bodies so far after the ship sank during a crossing from the Saudi port of Duba to Safaga, 600 km (375 miles) southeast of Cairo.
But hundreds more are missing and rescue workers are running out of hope of finding more survivors. The ferry, which last had contact with the shore at about 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Thursday, was carrying more than 1,300 people.
The relatives, mostly male and dressed in traditional Egyptian robes common in rural areas, and mainly from families of Egyptians working in Saudi Arabia, sat on the pavement outside the gates of the port.
